The oldest surviving part is the 12th century watchtower, the scene of clashes between the republics of Siena and Florence. The main lodge dates back to the Renaissance when the castle was transformed into a villa residence. The frescos were painted by Ignazio Danti. Records of the period are conserved in the castle library. The castle has a restaurant with panoramic views and a 1,500 sqm thermal swimming pool.
